Make Chemistry concepts and calculations work together

VCE Chemistry · Units 1–4

A familiar formula helps only when a student understands when it applies. Our VCE Chemistry tutoring connects chemical models, balanced equations, numerical methods and written explanations, with teaching tailored to the student’s learning needs.

Learn in person in Melbourne’s western suburbs, or through individual online tutoring across Victoria. Smart Tutoring Services is led by Andrew, a PhD candidate in physics with an academic background in biochemistry, physics and mathematics. Our explanations, prepared resources and feedback are tailored to the student’s starting point.

Build understanding across Units 1–4

We strengthen the concepts later topics depend on: particles, bonding, chemical quantities, equations and relationships between structure and properties.

Support can extend to solutions and chemical analysis, energy and electrochemistry, rates and equilibrium, organic chemistry, synthesis and instrumental analysis. Sustainability and scientific investigation are considered where relevant to the student’s current study.

Lessons follow the applicable VCAA study design and the student’s priorities. When an earlier gap affects a new topic, we address the prerequisite rather than repeatedly practising a method that does not yet make sense.

A dependable approach to multi-step calculations

Chemistry calculations often contain several small decisions. Students identify the quantity required, select suitable relationships and track what each value represents.

  • Set up the chemistry: interpret the reaction, write appropriate equations and identify mole relationships.

  • Organise the working: show a clear sequence and handle unit conversions carefully.

  • Check the result: consider units, significant figures and reasonableness in context.

  • Explain the model: connect calculations and observations to the underlying chemical ideas.

Worked solutions let students inspect a method; fresh questions check whether they can apply it independently.

Prepare for unfamiliar questions

SAC and exam preparation goes beyond recognising worked examples. Students extract information from passages, analyse experimental results, interpret chemical representations and justify conclusions.

We develop the skills behind practical work: identifying variables, understanding measurement, interpreting graphs and discussing limitations or improvements. Support strengthens the student’s own reasoning and communication.

Prepared notes, targeted practice, assessments and fully worked solutions support revision. Errors guide what to revisit before moving to mixed questions and timed practice.

Choose a suitable way to learn

Individual, paired and small-group tutoring are available in person in Melbourne’s western suburbs, subject to suitable sessions and availability. Individual online Chemistry tutoring welcomes students across metropolitan, regional and rural Victoria, including Melbourne’s eastern suburbs.

Questions about Chemistry tutoring

Can you help with calculations and written explanations?

Yes. Numerical methods, chemical understanding and clear communication are developed together rather than treated as unrelated tasks.

What if my class has moved past a topic I do not understand?

Tell us where the difficulty began. We can identify the earlier ideas needed for current work and plan targeted practice alongside school topics.

What should I bring to the first conversation?

Your unit, current topics and recent feedback are useful. Mention whether you want ongoing support or preparation for an upcoming SAC or examination.

Find a clearer starting point in Chemistry

Tell us the student’s current unit, difficult topics and upcoming assessment priorities. We will discuss a practical next step, suitable times and fees before you decide.
